Lunchbox Notes

Every day, Jason or I put a note in Amelia's lunchbox. Some days they just wish her a happy day and others there is a bible verse and a probing question. Like, do you have a happy heart today? Or, Are you thinking of others today? I didn't actually plan on doing one every day until I noticed that Amelia wasn't throwing these away with her daily lunch trash. She was starting a collection. She would carry them all over the house and put them in random containers and include them somehow in her play. Next I noticed that when someone came over, she would go and get them and want to show them off. It is all very tender to me. She cherishes my little notes to her!

Up until Tuesday, I had never put a note in Lane's lunchbox. I just didn't really think he'd get it. Or care. On that particular day, for the first time ever, he was saying, "No school" over and over again. So I thought, I'd drop him a little note in his lunchbox.

He is presently sleeping with it. He has carried it all over the house since he got it. When I looked in his classroom that day he was sitting in the middle of the floor looking at it. He forgets about it from time to time, but whenever he rediscovers it, he attaches to it again.

I guess we cannot discount the words of encouragement we speak to our children. They are meaningful to their little world.

That's the sweetest thing I've heard in a long time.
I puts notes periodically, then when Elli says, "Can I get a note today?" I feel like a heel for not doing it every day.
Of course, she never carried hers around and played with them . . .

My mom used to do this EVERY day for my sister and me too. Continue to do that because it truly was the highlight of my day. What a sweet mommy you are! :)

Hello! Gin - we have more in common than we knew because I am also one who randomly puts notes in my kids' lunch...then suffers the blow of being asked, "when are you going to put a note in my lunch again?". Woops! I think my new response will be, "when are you going to cherish my note like Amelia and Lane do?" Kidding! Anyway, thanks (Gin and Bev) for your nice blog "comments" to my last "comment". I appreciate your compassion towards your bumbling friend! It seems the only lasting scar I have is that MR. Tomlinson now calls me "Christian Democrat"...and that just may be the best reason to vote for McCain! Oy vey...
Cheers! - Sara
