My first trip to the doctor today was for Owen's one year well visit.
Here are his stats:
- 23 pounds 9 ounces (I think Lane weighed that at six months:)
- 95th percentile for height
- 65th percentile for weight
- meeting all milestones for his age
My only concern to discuss with the doctor was his food issue. I've mentioned this before on a post. I cannot get the kid to eat real food. My other two tasted real food and never looked back. They didn't want to eat baby food ever again. Owen, on the other hand, spits out any food that isn't the consistency of a cracker or cookie. I've tried green beans, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, etc. He pushes them out immediately. I've even tried tricking him by hiding the food under a bite of yogurt. He moves the food to the side of his mouth, swallows the yogurt, then pushes out the piece of food. Sneaky little guy. I am so over baby food.
So my pediatrician starts talking about oral sensory issues and recommends an OT. Stop right there. I do not have time in my life to take my 12 month old to OT. I already have speech twice a week for Lane, I'm probably about to have to start PT for Amelia because she hasn't gotten her range of motion back from wearing her cast, not to mention the 3,000 doctors appointments I constantly have to go to. Plus, my friend Cameron is a great OT and her consults are free. So I just decided we would have to work on it more.
Today at lunch time, I got to thinking, what if it's the texture of the food on his hands and not just his mouth? This thought was because he won't even attempt to pick the food up off his highchair. So, I gave him a fork. What do you know? He put that piece of slimy ravioli right into his mouth on the first try. AND. ATE. IT. Hooray! It's all about small victories.
