Amelia had her first big day of soccer this Saturday.
The day started off with me pulling out all the adorable soccer gear I had purchased. Prior to this experience, we did not own one pair of remotely athletic shorts. So I got her the little cute shorts with the stripes down the side, a cute matching shirt, and the sock/ shin guard combination. Pictured here she is wearing her brothers 3T Nike basketball shorts and an old tank top. This would be because it didn't occur to me to try on the cute soccer clothes before the morning of the event. The XS ensemble I had purchased didn't have a prayer of staying on her skinny little butt. We then rummaged through brothers drawers until we found something that would work for the day. Good thing, too, because it ended up her team was given the ugliest possible color team shirt there was to choose from. There were good color options. One team got light blue, another red, even orange would have been fine. We got this dark green color with bright orange writing. How am I supposed to make a bow for that? Kidding. Actually Jason has forbid me from putting a bow in her hair at sporting events. I can live with that.
It doesn't occur to her that the shirt is ugly. She is so proud of that shirt. She skipped through Publix after practice telling anyone and everyone, "I'm number 2. I play soccer!" She didn't end up on the same team as her friend Andrew, but they were pleased to discover they were both number 2.
Actually, five out of the seven kids on her team (if you can call it that) ended up being from her preschool class. This is quite the coincidence seeing as there were about 40 four and five year olds signed up for this soccer group and there are no other kids from her school in any other group. If I didn't see myself how random he assigned the groups, I would have been sure it was predetermined to be this way. If she can't be with Andrew, I'm at least glad she is surrounded by her school friends. Knowing lots of moms there makes the event a little more tolerable-I'm always trying to turn the mundane into a social occasion that I will enjoy. The social part isn't so likely seeing as I spend my time chasing Lane and Owen around trying to keep them from running into the stations or falling down the bleachers.

Sadly, we did not have the hysterical experience of the event that my friend Alison had with her two kids. Please click here for lots of laughs on a similar story. If you take her story and minus the heat, most of the drama dies. Seeing as we are doing indoor soccer, the enjoyability factor for the rest of us remained pretty high.
Drama we did not have. A lot of enthusiasm we did. Amelia was really hyped about her big soccer day. Every time she saw me taking a picture she looked at me like she'd just eaten a few bags of sugar and started smiling and jumping up and down. I know this is an awful picture, fuzzy and grainy like all the pictures I took that day in the gym, but it captured perfectly her excitement for the sport, so I had to attach it.

Amelia ran into an old friend at soccer practice! It was Lexi's weekend to spend with George and she was gracious enough to part with him long enough for Amelia to get her picture taken with him. She was thrilled!
Did I mention that this soccer team has mandatory parent participation on the field? (Not sure what you call the field when it is actually a gymnasium.) I'm just saying this because soccer is the one sport that Jason knows nothing about. He doesn't even enjoy it. Pretty funny. It is very cute to see him out there with her, though. Oh, the things you'll do for your children!
