Attitude Remedy

If anyone has some great remedy for a four and a half year old with an attitude of a sixteen year old, by all means, please let me know!  Since I myself am at a total loss, I decided to try a reward chart.  Now this is a big step for me because I generally believe that the only reason a child needs to obey is because I said so.  Up to this point, that has been the way it is around here.  Lately however, there has been so much need for training that I have felt so negative and bitchy towards the kids but especially Amelia.  So, to hold myself more accountable to being positive and encouraging, I made a chart.  The items that can earn her a sticker are:

  • I was a peacemaker
  •  I obeyed my mom or dad RIGHT AWAY, ALL THE WAY, and with a HAPPY HEART
  •  I accepted my mom or dad's word as final
  •  I had self-control with my voice
That is just to name a few.  It has been going pretty well.  I think it has helped me to praise the right behavior more than I was doing before the chart.  Amelia will do almost anything for candy and I had to have a plan for what to do with the five gallon sized Ziploc bags of Halloween candy.  So, after she gets five stickers, she gets a piece of candy.

The last time Amelia got a piece of candy, Owen decided he needed one too.

Too cute! I think you are doing exactly the right thing. Continue to praise the good things she has done rather than focus on all the bad all the time. Good job. :)
