Jason and I promised each other we wouldn't do birthday or Christmas gifts this year. First of all, we really don't need anything. And honestly, we are just a little overspent right now between some home improvements we've done and getting photo's of the kids. But, we didn't want to take that joy away from the kids. So Jason took Amelia to the cheap makeup isle at Walgreens to pick out my gift. Pictured below is my birthday present from Amelia and Lane.
As the story goes, Amelia was trying hard to make mommy's present all about her. She saw some red nail polish and showed initial excitement over the prospect of making this my gift. After another moment of consideration she explained to Jason that this would not be a good choice because, "Mommy doesn't let me paint my fingers red so we better find a pink one". Needless to say, she was very excited to give me the gift and then get to use both the sparkle polish and lip gloss.
Jason had to work even harder to oooh and aaahhh over his birthday gifts. I took the kids to the dollar store and told them they could each pick out two gifts, anything they wanted from the whole store. After going up every isle, Amelia looked up at me discouraged as if to say, "Mom, I know this is all junk". She settled on some bungee cords while Lane picked out an over sized calculator and a set of Allen wrenches. Jason did a great job at pretending to be overjoyed with their selections and his parents who were visiting got a big kick out of the whole thing.
