Beach Days

We just returned from a week at Siesta Key for our family vacation. I know you devoted blog readers didn't miss my daily blog since my only devoted readers were probably with me at some point in the week. We spent Sunday through Thursday with my side of the family and Thursday through Sunday with Jason's side of the family. With two siblings each and between 6 and 8 kids, it was a full house!

Overall the trip was a success. I think Jason and I will be enjoying the beach a bit more next year when Owen is at a more flexible stage. Not able to get used to the sand, he wanted to be held the whole time. Not exactly my idea of relaxing. Needless to say, Jason and I either traded off staying up at the house with him or sometimes we got lucky and my mom stayed in for his morning nap, allowing the rest of us to go down to the beach.

I must say, among the successes was getting three children to sleep in the same room and getting my 6'5 husband and I to fit in a double bed. I mastered it by the end of the week. Owen would go down at his normal 6:30. By 7:30, Amelia was exhausted from swimming and playing non-stop the whole day. We snuck her into the room, threatened her if she were to make a sound and wake up Owen, and tucked her in on the air mattress. Five minutes later, she would be zonked out. Lane, being abnormally cooperative, without any question would then go in and lay there silently until he fell asleep. It was a beautiful thing. Only one night did we have any problems. Jason went back there and found Amelia singing at the top of her lungs and playing peek-a-boo with Owen. It was pretty funny so she didn't get in much trouble. Especially since her softy dad was the one who discovered the incident. She would have at least gotten a stern talking to while I held back my laughter had I been the one to find her up to her mischief.
Oh? So you're still wondering about the 6'5 husband and myself fitting in the double bed? It's called Ambien. He took it, not me. It worked like a charm!

The next obstacle that turned out to be a success was Jason actually enjoying the beach. He. Doesn't. Like. The. Beach. (At all!) He doesn't like heat, sand, or salt. He doesn't like sitting in one place for longer than five minutes (unless it's at the computer). I think it's the kids that are making him enjoy it these days. That and our 12x12 Easy-Up tent. I mean, who wouldn't enjoy watching the kids play for hours and hours on end in the sand and shells. It was like a wonderland for them.
Amelia was the most excited to realize that many of the shells she had been collecting ("the poky ones") had crabs inside them. She had quite the collection by the time we left the beach. She is still carrying around a water bottle filled with these shells and several floating crabs. Floating as in no longer alive. Oh well, what she doesn't know can't hurt her. Can it?
It was a nice time spent with both our families. I thought I'd be sick of the beach by now but I could actually go and do the whole trip over again. Well, maybe I'll wait until Owen is a little older. But, I'll be looking forward to it until then.

Wish I'd thought to bring a sleeping drug to the beach. Of course, I need it at home, too. Haven't slept in 3 nights now. Will be taking sleep enhancing drugs. Tonight.
BTW, we're meeting Tori's new camp friend today.

Also, how do you insert the pics throughout the text of your blog?
